Feed-grade Zinc Oxide ZnO Used to Control Diarrhea in Piglets

The US President recently said the conflict between Russia and Ukraine had driven up the prices of all the world's major food staples, including wheat, corn, barley, oilseeds and edible oils, and that Russia and Ukraine together supplied more than 25% of the world's wheat exports and about 20% of its barley exports.

To address the food shortage, the Biden administration says it plans to increase the number of counties eligible for insurance for double cropping. Double cropping is when farmers grow two different crops a year on the same field.

Under Biden's plan, the number of counties eligible for two-season crop insurance would increase by 681, for a total of 1,935.

The UN has warned that up to 1.7bn people are "highly exposed" to the domino effect of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine on the global food, energy, and financial systems.  The agency says conflict could increase hunger in countries where people are already suffering from malnutrition.

Even countries where food is less scarce are being hit by rising prices. U.S. grocery prices rose 1% in April, compared with a 10.8% increase over the past 12 months, the Labor Department said recently.

According to the White House, global food prices have risen nearly 13 percent since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Besides, affected by the ever-changing international situation, the supply and prices of international bulk zinc oxide are still very uncertain.

Zinc oxide is an oxide of zinc. Insoluble in water, soluble in acids and strong bases. Zinc oxide is mainly used in chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, agriculture and other fields.

Feed-grade zinc oxide has a significant effect on the safe control of piglet diarrhea. However, zinc oxide will also cause rough coat of piglets, unbalanced absorption of trace elements, late growth retardation, environmental pollution and other problems. Therefore, feed-grade zinc oxide is a double-edged sword in controlling diarrhea in piglets.

Why?
Zinc oxide does have a good effect on controlling diarrhea. But zinc oxide as an amphoteric oxide, first of all, more than 70% of zinc oxide in gastric acid can not pass safely in the form of functional molecular state ZnO, and is transformed into Zn2+ which has no diarrhea control effect. Not to mention the destruction of bile and small intestinal fluid in the intestine. This is an important reason why a large amount of zinc oxide must be added to ensure that enough ZnO reaches the intestinal tract to play a role and achieve a good diarrhea control effect. For those dissolved Zn2+, will be over-absorbed, high blood zinc concentration, resulting in adverse effects on piglet coat color, growth speed and immune function.

So how to maximize the efficacy of zinc oxide, let the zinc of 1500ppm (based on zinc) play the role and effect of 3000ppm under conventional conditions, so that zinc oxide is not destroyed by digestive juices such as gastric acid, and exists and evenly dispersed in the intestinal tract in the form of molecular ZnO in its effective form?

How to deal with it?
Acid resistance, compatibility with chyme and lipophilicity are the decisive factors that determine whether zinc oxide can maximize the effect of antidiarrheal convergence. Only when zinc oxide is acid-resistant, can it not be neutralized by gastric acid, and can it reach the intestinal tract with molecular zinc oxide particles that can control diarrhea; only when zinc oxide is compatible with chyme can it be rapidly and uniformly dispersed in the intestinal tract and form a uniform protective film on the surface of the entire intestinal mucosa; only when zinc oxide is lipophilic, it can be in close contact with the intestinal mucosa of lipids and enrich to the surface of the intestinal mucosa, and the effect will be better.

How to treat zinc oxide with acid resistance? How to make zinc oxide disperse evenly in the intestines? How to make zinc oxide in close contact with intestinal mucosa? It is a problem that the manufacturer needs to solve.

As the duration of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine grows, its impact on commodities is widening amid the tug-of-war. Recently, European and American sanctions against Russia have been issued one after another. In response, Russia has taken advantage of its role as an important supplier of many energy and commodities, requiring exports of commodities, including energy, grain, metal, and wood, to "unfriendly" countries to be settled in robles. Therefore, it is expected that the price of the zinc oxide will continue to increase.
