The concrete curing additive

The concrete curing additive concrete

The concrete curing additive is an admixture that can greatly reduce the amount of mixing water under the condition of the same slump of concrete. The plasticizer is a kind of concrete admixture that can reduce water consumption under the condition of keeping the slump of concrete basically unchanged. Mostly anionic surfactants, lignosulfonate, naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde polymers. After adding the concrete mixture, it has a dispersive effect on cement particles, can improve its workability, reduce water consumption per unit and improve the fluidity of concrete mixture; Or reduce the amount of cement per unit, save cement. The concrete curing additive in the concrete slump is basically the same, can make mixing water consumption reduce the admixture by more than 15%.

Cement role as a carbon sink has been overlooked

The cement industry is the largest single emitter of carbon dioxide. A landmark 2018 report by Chatham House found that carbon accounted for about 8 per cent of global emissions.

But according to Jenny Burridge, principal structural engineer at the Concrete Centre in London, cement role as a carbon sink has been overlooked. "Concrete absorbs carbon dioxide," she said. "We have not talked about it much. But actually, that is one of the things we are looking at right now."

"How much carbonation is actually happening?" What is the total sink that we have in the UK and the rest of the world?"

"Different types of concrete absorb carbon dioxide at different rates," she added. For reinforced concrete, structural engineers specify that concrete has a low carbonization potential because this can lead to corrosion of the reinforcement. But she suggested that other types of concrete, such as masonry blocks, could be used to sequester carbon from the atmosphere. "Blocks of rock actually form carbonate very quickly," Burridge said.

Crushed concrete has greater potential because it has a larger surface area to absorb carbon dioxide, Burridge said.

"There are a lot of reasons not to knock down a building," she said. "But if you do knock it down, you should make sure you crush the concrete, because the carbonation happens quickly." "You can use crushed concrete as aggregate," she added.

Global cement production stood at 4.1 billion tonnes in 2019, according to the International Energy Agency. China accounts for about 55 per cent of global production, followed by India at 8 per cent. Efforts to decarbonize the cement industry include a project to build "the world first carbon-neutral cement plant" in Sweden and Carbicrete efforts to produce carbon-capture concrete.
